It’s not a requirement that you know how to swim to take sailing lessons on the Chesapeake Bay. At SailTime Virginia, we require all students and charter guests to wear life jackets at all times. However, having basic comfort with the water and the ability to tread using a flotation device are both highly recommended.
What if I get seasick?
Our instructors are well-prepared to handle seasickness. Many students who experience seasickness find that symptoms subside after they are able to take a few minutes to stay in the fresh air and focus forward to recalibrate their senses.
How long does it take to feel confident sailing on my own?
The answer can vary based on the number of courses and practice sessions you take on. Many beginner sailors find that they can develop a comfort level and muscle memory over the course of a multi-day cruising lesson. Generally, it can take a few weeks to months to feel fully confident with solo sailing.
Is it physically demanding?
Sailing is generally a leisurely experience that requires constant mental vigilance with bouts of needing to take on physically demanding tasks. Just how demanding sailing can be will depend on things like weather conditions and the size of your boat. Steering itself does require core strength and balance.
