Following successful completion of your IQC, the ASA will send you the instructor credentials and graduation letter.

Candidates will learn to teach how to skipper and crew aboard a sloop-rigged keelboat of approximately 20 to 30 feet in length daily in winds up to 20 knots. It is designed for sailors interested in building their core sailing skills, including sail trim and close-quarter maneuvering. The course covers more advanced sailing skills and sail trim. Jennie and husband (John?) were exceptionally interesting (having traveled the world) and knowledgeable (having worked at and with multiple global sailing/charter companies).My wife and two daughters did the basic 101 sailing school and spend about 3 hours out on Willoughby Bay, located just off of the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel (headed East on Interstate 64 from Hampton towards Norfolk).We went into the session with no idea what to expect (we won tickets at an auction) and came away with a confidence and basic know-how-to-sail confidence. We were so pleased that we are looking at possibly joining the SailTime Membership, my daughter is investigating sailing jobs in the states and Europe.I would highly encourage SailTime VA to local-area residents and others who may be visiting. This sailing school is top notch! I recently completed the ASA 114 class with Sailtime, and it was an incredible experience. Jesse, our instructor, was outstanding! We covered a wide range of skills, including various docking techniques, man-overboard (MOB) drills, and of course, plenty of sailing. My husband and I had a great experience completing the 101 course with Capt. Dave Wilbar in July. We gained a lot of knowledge in the two days and are looking forward to continue on to the 103 & 104 courses. I highly recommend Dave if you are new to sailing like I am. He was patient (good for me), very knowledgeable and answered all of our questions. The weather was looking questionable but he made sure we had plenty of time on the water and everything worked out perfectly. This was a great learning experience. Our instructor, Matthew Dunckel was very easy going, helpful, and very knowledgeable. All around he is a great instructor. Very patient with the many questions we had, and very thorough. I signed up and took Instructor Qualification Courses for ASA 101, 103, 104, and 118 with Captain Barry Sroka. SailTime was very good and had great communication leading up to the courses. Captain Barry was a great communicator and a wonderful teacher. He prepared us with an introductory email, a month in advance, with reading assignments and tasks to complete prior to our arrival. He made sure we knew how to sail and were competent and knowledgeable in the language, knowledge, and skills that sailing requires. He also made sure, through our prepared and taught lessons, and feedback sessions, that we had the pedagogical skills to be able to teach others how to sail safely and confidently.

My only critique would be to encourage folks to read specific parts of the book beforehand, not the whole thing. I took a basic keelboat 2-day sailing class at SailTime Chesapeake and was not disappointed. When I started, I struggled turning in to the wind for a Tack. When I started I struggled jibing each time I needed to Tack. Captain Karen saw my confusion, worked with me and worked with me until I found my way. SailTime and Captain Karen helped my pass my ASA 101 Certification. I enrolled in the ASA 103/104 courses as a refresher after being away from sailing for a while. Our instructor -- Captain Jim Lant -- was extremely skilled and knowledgeable both as a teacher of sailing and as a sailor. He tailored the experience to our needs and pace of learning and was very effective in conveying some of the finer points of coastal cruising and boat handling, especially leaving and returning to the dock in challenging situations. The boat -- a Hunter 36 -- was in great shape. We spent three nights aboard and sailed the boat in a variety of conditions and found in exciting and fun to sail.

Since spending 5 days and 2 nights with a good boat, great captain/instructor the main takeaway is the experience really depends on the captain, who in this instance was really great making learning a fun adventure. Captain Moby went above and beyond his duties and helped me get certified one weekend when the conditions weren't ideal but it was that weekend or never for me. He was an amazing teacher and when we weren't battling high winds and oncoming US Navy ships we had great conversations about the important things in life like Seinfeld and Captain Ron. Ms. Brandt proved to be both a highly competent captain and instructor. She covered the steps that need to be taken so many overlook before starting their engines let alone leaving the slip. I took ASA 103/104. Coastal Cruising and Bareboat Cruising. We had an excellent orientation to the boat and its systems, then sailed for three days. The weather presented fog and wind challenges. Captain Jim did a wonderful job coaching us with our practical sailing skills, and teaching us the content in two class manuals. Two days is not much time to learn the "new language" of sailing. So many terms to understand, so much practical knowledge to gain. Captain Dan worked so hard to help us understand the terminology and was patient with us as he taught us how to maneuver the boat through all of the points of sailing, sail trimming, and boat care. He constantly emphasized safety on the boat. He was a great teacher. I am very impressed with the course and with what I learned; I wish there was a little more time for hands- on because that was my weak area. SailTime is a great school for learning how to sail or to refresh your skills after being off the water for many years like I have been. I was looking for a school that followed a proven curriculum and one where the instructors had life experiences that could be discussed in the instruction and found both of those and much more at SailTime Norfolk. The training boats are Capri 22's which respond quickly on the water and the location is perfect to get into the mouth of the James River and Chesapeake Bay quickly. ASA 101 course was absolutely enjoyable and informative. I went from having no prior sailing experience to feeling very comfortable at the helm and much more prepared to go out on the water. I'm obviously not prepared to cross the Atlantic solo but that is not the purpose of that particular course It is to cement in the basics and provide you with a solid starting point to build on and the staff here do an excellent job of it. My recent trips have been with a Sailtime provided captain with my goal being to learn to sail. I’ve been out with them 3 times now and it’s been a great experience. I recently took the ASA 101 class with SailTime in Virginia Beach. I did not have a chance to read the entire book before the class; however, the instructors (Dave and Jim), did a great job of preparing me for the exam. Additionally, we spent the majority of time over both days on the water working through various sailing techniques and everyone in the class had a chance to get plenty of practice at each position on the boat. I plan to take the 103 course in the near future. I did have experience sailing, but found the course to be a greater refresher course having not sailed in a number of years. I called and made an apt not even knowing I was going to be available at the time of schedule. I am glad I did. The closer I got to the date, The more I was able to move around my schedule and make it happen. This was an amazing experience. The instructor went over the main topics and took us out on the water to teach us the rest. This is a hands on course.
